Abstract
Introduction: Previous studies have reported that the prevalence of osteoporosis in those aged ¡Ã50 years was 1.63% for men and 11.35% for women in Taiwan. The objective of this study was to compare the number of patients diagnosed with osteoporosis at one tertiary teaching hospital (1,300 beds) in the western coastal area of central Taiwan, with the estimated prevalence of osteoporosis from the nation-wide database.

Materials & methods: Diagnosis of osteoporosis was defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) diagnostic codes 733.00 and 733.01. We collect the ICD-9 diagnosed data from the hospital information system (HIS) Data Warehouse (KTRD), 2014-2016. As comparison, the prevalence of osteoporosis by sampling Taiwan¡¯s National Health Insurance database (NHID) were used, 1999-2001. Rational On-Lite Analytical Processing (ROLAP) method was used for data analysis of KTRD.

Results: The results showed a trend toward increasing proportions of coded osteoporosis in both KTRD and NHID. The prevalence rate were 2.2% (539/24229), 2.4 (598/24856), and 2.8% (697/25135) in KTRD, 2014-2016, respectively.

Conclusion: The diagnosis of osteoporosis was rarely used in this teaching hospital. It seemed that osteoporosis was considerably under diagnosed and undertreated in women population. This may have significant implications for the prevention of osteoporosis and related diseases.
